Hayden D. Greenlief of Weirton, a great family man, who loved people, passed away on Sunday July 24, 2022. He was 86.

Hayden was born in Troy, WV on October 20, 1935, the second of five children born to Shirley E. (Bill) “Red” and Helen Knisley Greenlief.

Hayden graduated in the class of 1954 from Weir High School. In October of 54, Hayden enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served his country for four years in active duty and four additional years on reserve duty.

On February 26, 1961, he married Winona Pleasants. In their 61 years of marriage, they were blessed with three sons, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Hayden provided for his family working many doubles as an electrician and motor inspector in the boiler house of Weirton Steel where he retired after 33 years of service.

A good Christian, Hayden nourished his faith at the Weirton Heights Free Methodist Church in Weirton and later at the Weirton Christian & Missionary Alliance Church. He enjoyed teaching Sunday school to the junior high aged children.

When his boys were young, he was the Cubmaster in Troop 31 in Weirton, and enjoyed coaching them in baseball. Hayden was instrumental in building the ballfields at the Weirton Baseball Association in Kings Creek. He cherished the time he spent with his family whether it be attending their sporting events or just spending the afternoon fishing. In the spring and summer, you could find him in his garden and in the winter bowling at the Holliday Lanes.

Most of all Hayden’s life could be summed up in three words: Faith, Family and Friends.

In addition to his parents, Hayden was preceded in death by his two brothers, Cota David and S. Edwin Greenlief; and his sisters, Bonnie Dodson and Catherine Greenlief.

Hayden will be remembered with love and admiration by his wife, Winona; his sons Hayden (Shelley) David (Lisa), and Shawn (Pam); his grandchildren, Nichole, Zachary, Hayden Douglas, Sean, Kelly, Brendon, Logan, Joe, Amber and John who he also considered a grandson; his three great- grandchildren, Travis, Heath and Owen; and many friends who will miss his caring and personable nature.

Additional visitation will be Thursday 10 AM until time of services at 11 AM at the Weirton Alliance Church 119 N.13th Street in Weirton.
